I
have been asked why am I writing a book and when
do I find the time? Great questions! I needed to
write the book and now I am making the time to complete
the manuscript. I started the book during a trip
to the Greek Islands.
I
awoke from my sleep and took my travel journal into
the tiny bathroom at two in the morning in our cabin
on The Wind Spirit cruise ship. My husband and I
were on a cruise of the Greek Islands with Brian
Weiss and James Van Praagh. We were on “The
Voyage of Enlightenment”.
That
evening, a week before September 11, 2001, we had
rescued two Afghani refuges from the Aegean Sea who
would have died on their deflated raft, had it not
been for the chance meeting with our ship that was
under sail to Rhoades Greece.
When
I was awakened at two in the morning, I began to
write in my journal about the shift in thinking that
needed to occur in our society. We needed to look
at health care differently than we currently did.
We needed to regain focus on healing and shift away
from curing as our ultimate goal. And so was born ‘The
Healing Consciousness”.
Of
course I was too busy to even think about writing
a book, given my practice, my husband and my two
small boys. Then I realized that I had to write my
story about how I was awakened to the healer that
resided with in me. The healer that society and modern
medicine had suppressed.
I
have, over the years, shared many of the experiences
that are detailed in the book with my patients and
friends. It just seemed like the logical thing to
do to write the book so that I would be able to share
my spiritual awakening with my friends, patients,
colleagues and anyone else that cares to listen.
When you awaken to your essence then you can’t
help but listen to the messages that you receive.
Below
is the introduction to The Healing Consciousness.

How
quickly we have forgotten the tremendous gift we
have to impart upon our patients. As physicians,
we should be healers first and work toward cure when
we can.
The
art of healing has been lost by the technologically
advanced society that we have become. Historically
male energy has developed the technology and the
wonders of modern medicine, which focus on cure as
its ultimate goal. With the addition of female energy,
which focuses on the mind, body, and spirit connection,
we can embrace the concept of healing as being greater
than simply curing disease.
I
pride myself on staying current with the latest technological
advancements in breast cancer care. I offer my patients
the best that science has to offer both surgically
and medically to treat their body when they are found
to have this disease and dis-ease we call cancer.
My definition of dis-ease, the departure from mental,
physical, and spiritual well-being, is often manifested
in the processes we know as disease.
Curing
the disease and its physical symptoms will not guarantee
healing of the dis-ease. I can no longer treat my
patients with only surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation
therapy, as this concentrates solely on the physical
body. My patients need more and deserve more than
the standard treatment and care traditional medicine
has offered them.
Once
the body has been treated for cancer the healing
process is just beginning. Adopting a holistic approach
to breast cancer care has made a tremendous difference
in my patients’ lives and also in my satisfaction
as a physician and healer.
I
truly understand I cannot cure the disease in everyone
with cancer that walks through my office door. As
a healer I know I can empower my patients that I
cannot cure of their disease to heal their dis-ease.
Through
the passing of my patients and friends I have learned
the most precious gift: the gift of healing. When
I began my journey in medicine my goals were very
different than they are today. I have always considered
myself to be a very compassionate caring individual.
I
credit the physicians who have trained me as a surgeon.
They gave me the opportunity to develop my surgical
skills to perform state-of-the-art surgery on my
patients. However, only through my spiritual growth
over the past seven years have I truly come to understand
the gift of healing that we as physicians have to
share with our patients.
The
human interaction and connection you make with another
human being is the greatest gift a physician can
share with their patient. It sounds so simple, but
the only thing we have eternally is the energy between
two individuals.
When
modern medicine cannot cure melanoma, colon cancer,
breast cancer, or Lou Gehrig’s disease, when
it strikes a fellow physician, it is time to look
beyond traditional medicine to find a new understanding
of what is really needed to heal.
As
physicians, we often attach ourselves to outcomes
and feel responsible for everything that happens
to our patients. As a society, we often blame physicians
for outcomes that are well beyond the responsibility
of the physician.
The
paternalistic aspect of medicine has created a situation
where the patient allows the physician to make decisions
about their care without taking any responsibility
for their health care treatments. They hold the physician
completely responsible for any adverse outcomes.
It is this mindset that contributes to the current
malpractice crisis and the ego of the physician.
If
the physician and the patient are not partners in
the treatment of disease, the possibility exists
for blame when the outcome is not as expected. Physicians
need to be held accountable and need to practice
medicine to the highest standards that are humanly
possible. We’ve created a health-care system
that demands physicians practice defensive medicine.
As a result, the art of medicine being a healing
profession has gone by the wayside.
The
greatest lesson treating cancer in my patients has
taught me is to be truly present in the moment. Making
a connection with another human being is the ultimate
gift medicine gives to both the patient and the physician.
To
be truly present in the moment requires continual
self-awareness by the physician. We must stop the
constant chatter in our minds long enough to connect
with another human being, which allows us to access
the healing consciousness. As we utilize this higher
consciousness while working with patients toward
their personal healing, we are using this energy
in its purest form.
My
spiritual growth has been, and continues to be, a
wonderful journey. I have learned from the multitude
of synchronicities in my life that led me on this
path of self-awareness: there are no coincidences
in life. By writing this book and sharing my experiences
with you, the reader, I hope to awaken you to your
higher consciousness. When you ‘get it’,
you, too, will be aware of the gifts the synchronicities
in your life offer you.
None
of us are guaranteed tomorrow. That is why we must
cherish the present.
